Speak Jesus

I recently attended a women’s conference and during a time of worship, the song “I Speak Jesus” started playing.  It reminded me of the importance of speaking Jesus to ourselves and others.  So, what does it mean to speak Jesus?

Day after day we fight battles of impure and untrue thoughts about ourselves and others.  These thoughts can be displayed through our actions and habits.  I used to believe that this was a battle that could not be won, especially speaking Jesus in my own life.  My inner critic continued to beat me down moment after moment and it was exhausting.  I was never good enough, smart enough, loved enough, and I did not respect myself or the body that God gave me.  This wreaked havoc on my depression and anxiety resulting in poor decisions regarding the habits I viewed as necessary and important.  It took years to figure out a way to quiet that inner critic and find peace in who God created me to be, who God says I am, and believe that His love for me is unconditional and everlasting.  I am now able to speak Jesus into my own life almost as easily as I can for others.  This is a battle we must choose to continue to fight every day as it takes great effort to remind ourselves of our worth, replace the enemies lies with truth, and reach out to others when we cannot do this alone.  God created every one of us in His image, hand crafted by Him, with the ability to love our neighbors as ourselves.  Believing this and reflecting this is speaking Jesus.

Speaking the love of Jesus into our own lives can be a grueling task that we quickly dismiss out of exhaustion.  This dismissal allows the enemy a front row seat into our thoughts.  We must take the time to replace the voice of our negative and hurtful inner critic with the voice of a loving God.  This can be a minute-by-minute task some days, but well worth the effort as it leads to the beginning of a renewal process within the mind.  In Philippians 4:8 we read, “finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.”  This is a great verse to show us what our minds should be focused on, and when our minds are focused on these things, the light of God will flow through us and reflect in our habits, actions, and words spoken to ourselves and others.  This light of God radiating within us and from us is speaking Jesus.

If you took an inventory of your thoughts, actions, habits, and words would you believe that you speak Jesus?  If the answer is no, are you willing to start working towards a renewal of the mind, heart, body, and spirit?

Throughout the day journal any thoughts you have about yourself or others.  While reflecting on these thoughts ask yourself the question, would I say these things about a friend or someone I love.  If the answer is no, challenge why you believe these things about yourself or others and then replace the beliefs with the truth of God.  This is an ongoing and trying process, but as you continue to challenge and change these thoughts you will start to see changes in your habits, words, and actions.  You will start to speak Jesus into your own life and the life of those around you.
