Perfect love drives out fear…. and envy!
Proverbs 27:4 says “Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming, but who can stand before jealousy?”
Though it may seem like jealousy and comparison have the power, we’re going to talk about a
greater power that far surpasses and overcomes!
In the midst of this battle of envy Saul has with David, there is another character, Saul’s
son, Jonathan, who happens to become BEST FRIENDS with David. David was destined by
God to become the next king, and I’m sure Jonathan was hoping he would become king. Yet,
here we see Jonathan is not envious of David. How? Jonathan loved David with a brotherly
love!
– This is how we overcome envy, it’s love, and 1 John 4:8 says love is God Himself!
1 Corinthians 13 says love does not envy. Love in Hebrew means “to know.” So to
overcome envy for others, God wants us to love others which means getting to know
them.
– The Root of insecurity is a misunderstanding of identity. Knowing our identity is in
Jesus, when we’re clear on what His word says, you’re going to see it changes
everything, and His love for us overcomes envy, and fulfills all our needs.
Envy is demonic in nature according to James 3:14-16. If we don’t delight in what God is doing
in someone else’s life, I’m telling God He doesn’t know what He’s doing, making envy a form of
unbelief, so we have to continue to focus on the opposite of envy, Faith and love.
Let me talk about how we can apply this to own lives like this:
When I love someone, truly like Jesus loved us enough to lay down His life for us, then we can
lay down our lives for others, but this type of love is only possible through Him, it is truly
supernatural! We can’t get rid of the thoughts or feelings, and God doesn’t expect us to,
but what He helps us do is transform our thoughts and feelings to align with His will.
Now that I realize Jesus’s love for me, I can see others and love others the way God
does, and now what that means is, instead of the jealousy, now I don’t want my friends to go
through the broken engagement, I’d rather take the burden, I’d rather take the pain. God, please
let me go through this instead of them, just like Jesus went to the cross instead of us. And not
only do I now want to take the burden from them, but God, can you bless them?! Please help
them get the husband, the baby, the kids, the grandkids, the home, the money, the retirement
package, and may you get the glory in it all!
How do we remain confident, no matter what we face in life, no matter how we look, no
matter our age, no matter what? When we understand Jesus came as God’s one and only Son
to save us, to have life to the full now and into eternity, when we didn’t deserve it, then we want
to show this grace and love for others, putting their needs before our own like Jesus did for us. It
all goes back to the cross, guys, picture Jesus on the cross, dying for you, when we do, what
more could we ask for? What’s there to be jealous of? For more check out this message :
