When the Story Changes: Finding God’s Provision in the Middle of It
There are moments in life when the story you thought you were living suddenly changes. Not gradually. Not with a slow transition you can prepare for. Just…different. For years my world was centered around being a married, stay-at-home mom raising four kids—three boys and a girl. My days were filled with the beautiful chaos of motherhood: packed lunches, school schedules, laundry piles, and late-night prayers over my children. It was the life I expected to keep living. But sometimes God writes a different chapter than the one we imagined.
Suddenly I found myself stepping into a new reality—single parenting while working full-time. It wasn’t the path I planned, and if I’m honest, there were moments when the weight of it felt overwhelming. Four kids. One income. A heart that was still healing.
And yet, right in the middle of the uncertainty, I began to see something I hadn’t noticed before: God was already providing. Not always in the ways I expected or to be completely honest— felt that I deserved. But always in the ways I needed.
Things like a friend who showed up at the exact right time. A church community that surrounded us with support. A career in ministry that I so love and so needed. Strength for a day that I didn’t think I could get through.
Jesus once said:
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink… But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
— Matthew 6:25, 33 (NIV)
For years I had read that passage as a comforting idea. But in this season, it became something different. It became real and it applied to my life. God’s provision didn’t mean life suddenly became easy, no, no. It meant I wasn’t walking through it alone.
Sometimes provision looks like peace in the middle of chaos. Sometimes it looks like courage when fear would make more sense. And sometimes it looks like daily reminders that God is still writing the story.
Scripture says:
“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 4:19 (NIV)
Not some of our needs. All of them. Financial needs. Emotional strength. Wisdom for parenting. Grace for the days when we don’t have it all together. Looking back, I can see something I couldn’t see at the beginning: God was faithful in every step. Not because the circumstances were perfect. But because He was present.
If you’re walking through a season where life looks nothing like what you expected, you’re not alone. The chapter may have changed, but the Author hasn’t. And the same God who carried you through yesterday is already preparing what you’ll need for tomorrow.
