Age Doesn’t Disqualify Us

A grocery store helper called me a “little old lady.”
I’m sorry… WHAT?

The young guy helping me with my groceries was feeling a bit chatty as we walked towards my car parked beside one of those trucks that could probably pull my entire neighborhood behind it.

I opened the trunk of my car and he exclaimed with quite surprise, “Oh, I thought we were going to that truck. But then I thought, “I can’t imagine this little old lady driving a big truck like that.”

Let’s just pause right there. Little old lady?

I laughed in that moment, but it also reminded me how easy it is to believe the lie that age somehow disqualifies us.

Have you ever looked at your life and quietly wondered, “Did I miss my chance? Did God have something wonderful planned for me twenty years ago, and was I busy trying to fold a fitted sheet when the opportunity came by?”

Maybe you’ve wondered that and never said it out loud.

Well, I’ve got encouragement for you today!

Abraham’s story has something to say to us.

Abraham was nearly 100 years old when God fulfilled His promise.
The Bible tells us Abraham thought his body was “as good as dead.”
The Bible also tells us he “never wavered in believing God’s promise…”

“… In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this, he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.” (That’s from Romans 4.)

Here’s what I love about Abraham’s story.
God didn’t look at Abraham and say, Sorry, you’re past the age limit.
He didn’t tell him, That promise expired thirty years ago.

God’s promises don’t expire. Not at 40. Not at 60. Not at 80.
They’re just as true today as the day He made them.

Sure. There are days when I walk into a room and can’t remember why I went there.

But here’s the deal. I don’t think that’s always our age.

I think it’s a lifetime of memories, experiences, lessons learned, and names of people from high school all competing for shelf space.

God isn’t waiting for us to become younger before He blesses us.

God promises you a full life today.
Purpose today.
Joy today.

Age doesn’t disqualify us from God’s goodness.

God’s promises
are just as true at seventy
as they were at seventeen.

If God could fulfill His promise through Abraham at 100, then my age doesn’t disqualify me from God’s purpose, God’s timing, or God’s goodness.

You know, I’m half tempted to go buy the biggest pickup truck I can find, drive it back to that grocery store, and ask the same young man to help me load my groceries.

Then when he says, “Ma’am, is that your truck?”
I’ll say, “Yes. And God’s not finished with me yet.”

(Although backing it into a parking space may require prayer.)

Age may change what we can do.
But it never limits what God can do.
And God’s goodness is still showing up
—in this season, in this chapter, right in front of you.
