Stress, Laughter, & Our Good Shepherd

Stress, Laughter, & Our Good Shepherd

Published May 14, 2024

I love laughing, and I believe everyone does too. Last week was International Moment of Laughter Day – April 14th. One of my favorite types of jokes is when children unintentionally say something funny. Here’s an example:

“A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible — Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the verse. Little Bobby was excited about the    task, but he just couldn’t remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Bobby was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly,
“The Lord is my shepherd . . . and that’s all I need to know!”

Laughter is scientifically proven to help people heal, making it one of the best remedies for the soul, especially for those experiencing high levels of stress. April is also National Stress Awareness Month, and it’s quite fitting that these two events happen in the same month. Looking at the joke above, Little Bobby got it right. He may not have remembered everything, but he remembered the most important thing: “The Lord is my shepherd.” We sometimes make things more complicated than they need to be. We overthink, analyze, and try to control every outcome — leading to more stress. We forget to laugh, trust, be present, and most importantly we forget the important truths that God is telling us. April is a month of showers, and maybe you’re going through a tough time in life. Perhaps you’re experiencing a lot of stress, or you haven’t had a good laugh in a while. In those difficult times, remember that God is with you, and He is your Shepherd. One of my favorite verses is James 5:13, which says, “Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.” So, hold on through the showers and continue seeking God. You never know what flowers remain on the other side. And don’t forget to find moments of laughter. Give yourself grace; this life is hard, but He is with us through it all
