Peace- What is it? How do I get it?

Peace- What is it? Is it a place? Is it a feeling? Is it a circumstance? I like the beach…I often say it feels peaceful. That doesn’t quite define it though, does it? Does it look like having all of your needs and wants met? What if life is hard or my kids are struggling? Can I feel peace during those times? If peace only comes when my circumstances are perfect, I’m in a perfect place or I feel good, what happens when life isn’t perfect or those circumstances aren’t met?  If any of those things aren’t true, will I ever experience it? How often does life go as we hope or plan?

What is the definition of peace?

Merriam-Webster defines peace as a state of harmony, calm, freedom from hostility, war, mental anxiety, tranquility or quiet.

What if you could have peace every moment of every day? Do you know what? It is actually possible…and promised.

In John 14:27, Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, MY Peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

It looks like Jesus defines His peace as lack of fear or being troubled.

Jesus got into a boat and His disciples followed him. Matthew 8:24 explains what happened in the boat. “Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.”

Jesus was asleep, in the boat, during a storm. His disciples were terrified and had to wake him up. He didn’t seem worried or fearful. He was asleep. How? He had peace, in the midst of the storm. He was peace in the midst of the storm.

Do you ever feel fearful or troubled? Is that a feeling you enjoy having?

As a believer, according to John 14:27, we own Jesus’ peace! He gave it to us, so we possess it! Wow! That’s pretty cool! Sometimes we forget about things we already possess or own. Have you ever gone to the store and bought something you already had at home and just forgot you had already bought it? I have…sometimes we misplace something and think we need to just buy it instead of looking for what we already have.

Sometimes we put things in a corner and forget about it. Is peace one of those things for you?

Peace is YOURS! It’s a choice to put on!

Can I remind you that Jesus is the author of Peace and He already gifted it to us? We can choose to remember that He has overcome all the enemy threw at Him and that, no matter what life may look like, He’s already won the battle?

There is a side of the circumstance you are in currently that will, one day, be in your rearview mirror.  Can I remind you that you have made it through 100% of the hardest days of your life so far? The Bible tells us to remember what we have overcome, with His hand guiding us.

Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the Peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (NIV)

If you’re lacking peace today, maybe it’s just because you forgot that it is something you already possess. It’s a gift Jesus left you and me.

Sometimes we forget because we are holding on to things that God has asked us to give to Him. When we hand over our worries, anxieties, our questions, anything the enemy wants us to focus on, they become the problem of the One who has the authority to handle it, and in exchange, He hands us HIS PERFECT PEACE.

Today, I’d like to encourage you to open that gift of peace and then put it on.
